You’re on an Athens cruise to Greek islands and you’ve arrived in Aegina. If you’re a hiker, you’re in for a treat! The island has got a wide selection of terrain, a mild enough climate and gorgeous views for everyone to enjoy. Below is a guide to most popular Aegina walking trails:

From Anitseou to Mt. Ellanios to Paxia Rachi

This hike is about 4 kilometers long and while not the easiest, it’s certainly not the most difficult. Start at Anitseou village, head north west until you reach a road to your left – turn here. Continue walking until you come across signposts directing you to the ruined temple of Ellanios Zeus, located up high on Mt. Ellanios. When you reach the top, take a moment to enjoy what is a spectacular view. Then, head back down the path until you reach the main road and turn towards Paxia Rachi village. This hike is incredibly pretty, with stony paths and steep rugged landscape. You can also visit the nearby Valley of Elaiona, just south of Paxia Rachi. The valley is very scenic, more so because of the olive trees that you will find, several of which are more than 400 years old.

From Aegina Town to Kondos to Paleohora

Around 7 kilometers long, this trail is one worth undertaking for the great sites along the way. As you head for the village of Kondos, you will pass several churches including the iconic Agios Nectarios. Once you’ve reached Kondos, turn left and follow the slope, moving northward until you reach Palaiohora, a hillside medieval village dotted with the ruins of 38 beautiful stone chapels once numbering 365, and other old buildings.

From Paxia Rachi to Aegina Town

Head northeast from Paxia Rachi until you reach the main road and turn left. Keep walking until you come across Tsikides village. As you continue to Aegina town, you will encounter beautiful pistachio groves and other lovely greenery. The hike is about 7 kilometers long and relatively easy.

To Marathonas from Paxia Rachi

This hike is anywhere from 2 to 2.5 kilometers long depending on the route you take. Begin your walk heading westward from Paxia Rachi towards the coast. The road meanders, so you’ll have the option of either moving north to Kapotides or continue to Marathonas, a lovely seaside destination.

Things to remember!

Make sure to be sun conscious, wear a sunhat and slather on the sunscreen. Also make sure to wear light clothing, comfortable walking shoes and carry a bottle of water so that you don’t get thirsty!

An Athens one day cruise is a great way to see some of the Greek islands. Especially once you’re done seeing all of Athens’ attractions. One of the nearby islands is Hydra. Hydra is a fascinating place with a lot to see and many things to do. So we’ve come up with 5 activities that help you discover much of what this island has to offer!

Soak in the architecture

Hydra is one of those places that you can get lost in and not want to find your way out. Its exquisite architectural charm draws you in. The cobbled lanes and alleyways, the beautiful three and four storeyed stone manors. Thirdly, the brightly coloured shutters, windows and doorways. Take the time to explore this captivating hillside town, it’s well worth exploring.

Take in a museum or two

Hydra has a fascinating history, much of which is evidenced in the collections housed by several museums on the island. For instance, Hydra’s Ecclesiastical Museum is in the Church of Assumption. Therefore, is located at the port contains several Byzantine icons, jewellery, manuscripts, and other historical relics. The Historical Archives Museum is located in a beautifully renovated stone mansion and keeps many religious, educational and cultural archives from the early 1700s to 1865.

Go on a walking tour

Go on a walking excursion organised by Athens Day Cruise. You will visit a number of the island’s historical landmarks such as the National Merchant Marine Academy established in the 18th century. In addition, the statue of Admiral Miaoulis is located at the entrance of Hydra’s harbour, famed for his role leading Hydra in the fight against the Ottoman Empire at the start of the Greek War of Independence. Furthermore, a traditional patisserie founded in 1930 and which is famous for its delicious macaroons. In conclusion, the family run Rafalia’s Pharmacy which opened its doors in 1890, and is today still regarded as one of the most beautiful pharmacies across the globe.

Visit some beaches

You can’t visit Hydra and not explore at least some of its beaches. About 2km west of Hydra town is Vlychos Beach, a lovely pebbled beach that’s perfect to go to if quiet is what you’re after. Near Vlychos village is the charming Kaminia Beach which is popular among families with children. The gorgeous Agios Nikolaos beach, a sheltered sandy beach located in a cove, is within walking distance. Similarly is Spilia, not so much a beach but rather a rocky area with rocks from which people can jump into the dazzling water below.

Try the local cuisine

Hydra has a great selection of tavernas serving up traditional Greek dishes that you must try at least once! From gorgeous fresh fish grilled to perfection, to decadent appetizers like tzatziki. You can taste stuffed peppers or vegetables wrapped in airy, crispy puff pastry and other plates like moussaka, fried calamari, and so much more.

While this list doesn’t contain everything one can do on beautiful Hydra, it should make it easier to decide what to see if your stay on the island is a relatively short one.

You’re done visiting the Athens attractions and are on your Athens one-day cruise to Hydra, Poros and Aegina. You’ll be spoilt for choice in terms of historical exploration of this region of Greece.

In this instance, let’s talk about Aegina, the once capital of Greece. Aegina offers much to see by way of historical sites and even a festival or two, accompanied by a spectacular Aegean backdrop.

Here’s our pick of 5 of the most popular places to see and things to do on Aegina!

The Temple of Aphaia

A lot consider the temple of Aphaia as one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. This extraordinary 5th century Doric temple is located 10km east away from Aegina town. Dedicated to the goddess Athena, the well-preserved ruins of this once impressive temple sit on a hill overlooking the sensational Aegean Sea. With 25 original Doric columns still standing, the temple remains a must-see for history lovers.

The Hill of Kolona

This infamous historical site on Aegina is home to a single Doric column of the ancient Temple of Apollo. Located north of Aegina town, this column was once part of the temple’s rear section (opisthodomos). Various excavations of the site have uncovered the remains of 11 other settlements, evidencing ongoing development over thousands of years.

Monastery of St. Nektarios

Founded between 1904-1910 by Bishop Nektarios, the monastery is located about 6km from Aegina’s town centre. Bishop Nektarios was a popular priest and teacher who reportedly performed several healing miracles, even after his death, and was officially declared a Saint in 1961. The monastery is still regarded as one of the most important religious structures on the island. Many international travelers, as well as locals, seek out the tomb to pay their respects. Some do so in the hope of being healed of illness.

The Aegina Fistiki Festival

Aegina is world renowned for having some of the best tasting pistachios globally so if you’re on the island during the month of September, then the Aegina Fistiki Festival is well worth attending. This 4-day event held in honour of the much-loved pistachio is filled with a variety of activities such as music, theatre, art and dance for you to enjoy! You can also indulge in some of the decadent pistachio treats on offer!

Aegina International Music Festival

If you happen to visit Aegina in August, you may get to experience the incredible music festival. It is held on the island annually and it lasts more than two weeks. This summer festival offers an eclectic mix of bands, choirs, and artists of jazz and classical music, including new talent and renowned musicians. Worth going to if you can!

Although not an exhaustive list, these are definitely a great way to get to experience at least some of what Aegina has to offer!

Poros has a rich history with many interesting ancient sites to discover, above all the Saronic Islands. It also offers a beautiful, forested landscape and gorgeous sea views. This makes the island an appealing destination to experience. So where do you go in Poros to explore as much as you can of this wondrous place in just 60 minutes?

Here is a list of our top 5 favourite sites where you can either catch a glimpse into the islands past, or take in the beautiful nature of this Saronic gem.

1. Poros Clock Tower

The Clock Tower is the first thing you will see as you dock in Poros’ harbor. This landmark structure is located on the highest part of the island. A walk to the top offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape and sea that’s well worth witnessing. Definitely a photographer’s dream.

2. Love Bay

Love Bay is one of the island’s most gorgeous beaches located about 4 kilometres north-west of Poros town. It’s no surprise that Love Bay is incredibly popular among locals and travellers, be they families with children or couples. The nature that surrounds it is stunning, and the beaches white sands, small pebbles and crystal waters are absolutely breath-taking. One cannot help but falling in love with this picturesque setting.

3. Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi

Iakovos the Second found this holy monastery. He was an Athenian Archbishop, in the early 18th century. Having experienced what many say was a life-saving miracle in this region is what instigated the build of what was to become the monastery. Zoodohos Pigi once served as a refuge for soldiers who fought in the Greek Liberation War in 1821. It is also where the first Ecclesiastical School was established in 1830.

4. The Temple of Poseidon

Poros is the setting of many mythological tales, such as that of Poseidon’s son, Theseus. He was infamous for having killed the Minotaur of Crete and for whom the Temple of Poseidon was built. Built sometime in the 6th century, this temple once served as a centre where religious and civic matters of several ancient Greek cities were discussed. Although very little remains of Poseidon’s temple, some of the statues recovered from the site are at the Poros Archaeological Museum.

5. Archaeological Museum of Poros

For lovers of history, this museum is well worth visiting for the collections that is houses. From Mycenaean relics, geometric amphoras from Troezena, Roman artefacts, figurines, and finds from various excavations at the sanctuary of Aphrodite Akraia and the Temple of Poseidon, there is a lot to see and learn about.

While one hour may not be enough time to visit every single place on our list, it’s certainly enough time to pick even one or two that best cater to your interests and explore them to the fullest.

You’re done exploring the Athens attractions and now feel like taking in some of the Greek islands, which is very easy and a lot of fun to do being how close they are to Greece’s capital city by boat! Taking a one-day cruise from Athens to Hydra, Poros and Aegina will give you the opportunity to enjoy three gorgeous islands in a short space of time. Just remember, there are a few essential items that you’ll need to take with!

1. An easy-to-carry bag

You don’t want to be travelling with a bag that’s too heavy or too bulky, especially on a cruise that lasts only one day. Keep it light and pack the essentials only. Convenience is what you’re after, rather than breaking your back with heavy gear. You’ll be island hopping after all. A backpack is probably the easiest to carry, just don’t fill it with unnecessary stuff.

2. A camera

This is a definite essential, because how else will you be able to capture the breath-taking scenery of each of the Saronics? Hydra, Aegina and Poros offer something distinctively unique, be it their natural rugged landscape, panoramic sea views, historical sites, or eclectic architecture. There is a myriad of places that you will get to see, so make sure you have your camera handy to take pictures to remember this incredible holiday experience.

3. Beachwear (and accessories)

You’re going to be island hopping and chances are, swimming will be on the agenda (weather permitting). Even if swimming isn’t your thing, you may just want the chance to relax on a beach, soaking up some island sun. So, make sure to pack a bathing suit, and don’t forget a towel, sunglasses, some sunscreen and a hat. Sun protection is key!

4. Suitable clothes and shoes

You’ll be onboard and off. You may go on an Aegina swimming tour or decide to do a Hydra walking tour. You basically want to be prepared for any activity. This means ensuring that you are dressed in suitable clothing (preferably light and airy) and comfortable shoes. And as a precaution, pack an extra set of each for the unexpected mishaps.

5. Local currency

While exploring the islands, you’ll probably want to purchase some snacks or souvenirs, or stop at a local restaurant to try some traditional Greek cuisine, so make sure to bring some local currency with you.

Aegina, is one of the most beautiful islands of Saronic Gulf. It has several popular beaches lining its coastline, some that are relatively secluded, others that cater to the influx of tourists visiting the island. Below are those 5 of Aegina’s top beaches that we consider to be among the most beautiful:

Marathonas Beach

Located in a traditional fishing village, Marathonas is one of the most famous Aegina top beaches. The beach is a quiet sandy beach that attracts many visitors, not least because of its picturesque beauty. It is well equipped with beach beds and sun umbrellas for hire, so definitely an option if you’re looking to relax in a spectacular setting. For those seeking something more active, there are a range of water sports available such as diving and snorkelling. Grabbing a bite to eat is also made easy by the many restaurants located here. Indulge in some traditional Greek cuisine, particularly the freshly made sea food at one of the local tavernas.

Perdika Beach

Secondly, Perdika is another beach of Aegina top beaches. It is situated in the fishing village of Perdika, this beach is intimately small, with a tranquil ambience, making it perfect for couples. The gorgeous views of the Peloponnese and Moni island enhance what is an already beautiful setting. The beach has rocky as well as sandy areas, with crystal clear water, making for a refreshing swim.

Souvala Beach

Located close to the village of Souvala, this is probably one of the loveliest beaches in the area. Renowned for its hot and cold springs, this sandy and pebbled beach is definitely one to visit.

Agia Marina Beach

If you’re looking for a family friendly beach that offers a bunch of water sports for the more adventurous to partake in, then Agia Marina Beach is where you should go. This sandy beach with beautifully clear waters is popular with tourists, particularly since it is located in front of one of the main tourist resorts in the area. Water sports include canoeing and parasailing, amongst others.

Kavouropetra

If you’re looking for something remote, with a wild beauty, then this is the beach you want to get to. Not one to get many visitors, you’ll get to enjoy the solitude, whilst taking in the magnificent sea view. It can be found near the village of Kypseli which is popular for its exquisite churches, as well as the pistachio trees that grow there.

Don’t forget to pack a sunhat, sun cream and some water as you explore Aegina’s beaches.

Travelling alone gives you the freedom to do as you please, however and whenever you want. Engaging with others is entirely up to, and for many, not having a travelling partner to consider makes decision-making on the road (or on sea) far less complicated. By following these 7 tips for solo travelling, we ensure you that loneliness will never be a risk for holidays.

For the solo travelers, we have some tips to assist you as you island hop across the Saronic Gulf, or visit anywhere else in the world for that matter.

1. Carry a mobile, stay reachable

Embarking on your solo travels, you’ve probably left some family and friends behind. All the more reason to take a mobile phone with you for those moments that you’ll want to get in touch with your loved ones. The peace of mind of knowing that you’re reachable will go a long way in easing their concerns about you travelling alone. It also means you’ll be able to reach out to anyone, should the need arise

2. Take just the necessities

Don’t over pack, travel light and take just what you need. Make sure you have comfortable shoes, light clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and your toiletries. The last thing you want is to be lugging heavy luggage around. You’re travelling solo, you want to keep things as easy and convenient as possible.

3. Make sure you’re insured

Yes, travel insurance is something we consider an absolute essential. Do your research and find an insurance plan that provides coverage in all the countries you’re travelling to. In particular, try and find a policy that will fly someone out to you should you land up in hospital during your travels. You simply cannot predict the “what ifs”, but you can prepare for them to a certain degree.

4. Be responsible

You’re on holiday, you’re bound to do some socializing along the way – have some fun. Which is great! Just look out for you. Drink responsibly, and stay sober. Don’t forget, you’re travelling alone. You need to keep your mind clear, and not let your guard down. Your safety always comes first.

5. Socialize

Travelling alone is great, yes. But so is meeting new people. You never know what epic friendships you could make, or the interesting conversations to be had! Join a guided group tour, like the one Athens Day Cruise organizes in Hydra and Aegina. Be approachable, be friendly, be social, and smile – people will be drawn to you, wanting to chat.

6. Learn some of the local language

And by this we mean, learn a few words to help you communicate. The locals will probably respect you more for it and that’s always a win when you’re trying to find you way around your destination.

7. Don’t flash your valuables around

Better yet, don’t travel with anything too valuable on you. Trying to keep it safe can be more hassle than it’s worth. Just make sure to safeguard your ID and your phone.

Remember to keep confident, not take silly risks, and take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way! Solo travelling is awesome, so enjoy it to the max!

So what happens when you dock in Poros? With about an hour on the island, you need to do as much as you can to discover its beauty and charm. Here are our 5 suggestions.

Visit the beaches

Poros has some great beaches, easily accessible, if not by boat then by taxi or bus. Visit Love Bay, renowned for its sense of romance and beautiful nature. Cross the bridge connecting Kalavria and Sphairia and have a swim at the lovely Kanali beach. Take in some awesome architecture and gorgeous scenery at Russian Bay, which has also been declared a historical monument.

Discover a fascinating history

Visit the Hatzopoulos Municipal Library which is located in a neoclassical building in Poros town. In the Library you will discover an extensive selection of shells, focusing on their link to palaeontological era. Explore the Archaeological Museum of Poros which exhibits artefacts from the Mycenaean civilization up to the time of the Romans.

Take in a couple of churches

Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this small white and blue Chapel of Panagitsa is located above Askeli beach. This beautiful building fits perfectly in the surrounding panoramic views of the island. Besides the Chapel of Panagitsa, visit the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi as well. This place of sanctuary is an integral part of the fabric that makes up the Poros’ history, and its legacy continues to captivate travellers today.

Indulge in some local cuisine

Indulging in some authentic Greek food is an absolute must on Poros. From delicious fresh fish and grilled meat, to vegetable casseroles and spicy meatballs, there’s something for even the most discerning palate to enjoy. You also shouldn’t miss the traditional Poros almond sweets, a decadence that deserves to be tried even just once.
